Trey Edward Shults’ Next Film is A Loose Remake of ‘Misery’

January 4, 2024 Jordan Ruimy

I thought Trey Edward Shults’ 2015 debut, “Krisha,” was a total masterpiece. If you haven’t checked it out, it’s absolutely worth a look.

That movie alone has me excited for whatever Shults would do next, and although I didn’t think his subsequent films, “It Came At Night” and “Waves,” were as accomplished as “Krisha,” they definitely sold me on the idea that this guy could eventually be an important part of American filmmaking this decade.

Last year, it had been reported that Shults’ next film would be written by himself and Abel Tesfaye aka The Weeknd (yes, the musician). Tesfaye will also lead a cast that includes Jenna Ortega and Barry Keoghan (him again!).

Now, there’s a rumor about this mysterious new film that I’m close to confirming. It’s about the plot of the film. Already one source has told me that what I have is accurate.

Supposedly, Shults’ film is a loose remake of Rob Reiner’s 1990 film, “Misery.” In it, The Weeknd plays himself, a famous singer, and Ortega plays his deranged fan/stalker. To make things more curious, last summer Ortega posted a shot of the house being used during production, and it’s practically the same one as in “Misery.”

The still-untitled film would also begin with an infamous, real-life incident that occurred to The Weeknd in 2015, when he lost his voice during a concert in Los Angeles — he managed to get through four songs before he had to cut the show short.

Based on Stephen King’s novel, 1990’s “Misery” tackled novelist Paul Sheldon (James Caan) who, after a car crash, gets “rescued” by former nurse Annie Wilkes (Kathy Bates), who claims to be his biggest fan. Annie brings him to her remote cabin to recover, where her obsession for his novels takes a very dark turn.

Plot details on Shults’ film will remain unofficial for now, but the film wrapped production last year. No release date has been announced yet, but I’m guessing this is most definitely a 2024 release.
