‘Argylle’ Debuts With 39% on Rotten Tomatoes

January 31, 2024 Jordan Ruimy

Will the bad “Argylle” reviews put a damper on Matthew Vaughn’s current momentum in the industry? He had a promising start in his career (“Layer Cake,” “Kick-Ass,” “X-Men: First Class”) but it’s all going to sh*ts right now for him.

As I’ve reported, he has quite a few projects in the works. Vaughn just completed production on a secret action movie, he’s planning to reboot ‘Kick-Ass’ and is currently writing ‘Kingsman 3.’ He also wants to make a ‘Superman’ movie with Henry Cavill.

Back to “Argylle,” which I won’t be catching until tonight, it debuts with a 39% rotten score and 40 Metascore. Those are the worst reviews of Vaughn’s career — currently lower than 2017’s “Kingsman: The Golden Circle” and 2021’s “The Kingsman.”

The film stars Bryce Dallas Howard as a spy novel author who encounters a real-life, cat-allergic spy (Sam Rockwell) on a train. Based on the trailer, their adventure is filled with over the top action and it all just looks very slick.

The cast for “Argylle” is rounded out with Henry Cavill, John Cena, Dua Lipa, Bryan Cranston, Sofia Boutella, with Ariana DeBose and Catherine O’Hara and Samuel L. Jackson.

Supposedly, according to Vaughn, the budget for this one was not the oft-rumored $200 million. We still don’t really know how much it cost, but it probably wasn’t cheap. There’s probably a good reason why it’s being dumped in February.

Apple produced “Argylle,” which is being distributed by Universal Pictures, and scheduled to land in theaters this coming Friday, February 2. It’s currently projected to earn anywhere between $15-$20 million on opening weekend.
