Who saw Gregg Araki’s “I Want Your Sex”? His first film in 12 years came out this summer — it was fine, an erotic comedy starring Olivia Wilde and Cooper Hoffman that didn’t take itself too seriously. That said, Araki has already set up his next project.
According to Deadline, Araki wrote the screenplay, and will direct “The Decline of F*cking Western Civilization,” a dark comedy starring Ashton Kutcher, Alison Brie, and Jesse Williams. The film started shooting today in Los Angeles.
This is an ensemble piece, pitched as “Election” meets “American Beauty,” with the film’s plot being kept under wraps.
Before “I Want Your Sex,” Araki’s last film was “White Bird in a Blizzard,” an underrated 2014 gem starring Shailene Woodley. He’s mostly been dabbling in episodic TV over the last decade (“13 Reasons Why,” “Dahmer”) and created his own series (2019’s “Now Apocalypse”). Araki is best known for the cult classics “The Doom Generation” (1995), “Nowhere” (1997), and “Mysterious Skin” (2004).
