Yay? "Spider-Man: Brand New Day" is officially the highest-grossing movie of all time at the domestic box office, overtaking "Star Wars: The Force Awakens" (unadjusted for inflation).
Tom Holland's latest ‘Spider-Man’ movie has earned $936.7 million in 47 days of release. "The Force Awakens" held the record for more than a decade with $936.6 million. The record-breaking run started when the film opened to $360M domestically, the biggest opening weekend in box office history, topping "Avengers: Endgame."
The milestones kept coming from there. ‘Brand New Day’ became the fastest film to cross $800M domestically, doing it in 19 days compared to 23 for ‘The Force Awakens.’ In September, it became only the second film ever to pass $900M domestically, and it held the top spot at the domestic box office for six consecutive weekends.
Globally, the Marvel-Sony release has also passed "Avatar: The Way of Water" to become the third-highest-grossing film ever worldwide, trailing only "Avatar" and "Avengers: Endgame." The film was also the fastest to reach $1 billion worldwide, crossing that mark in just six days.
Now the question is whether Spidey can become the first movie to cross $1 billion domestically. With its legs having slowed down, and $63M in receipts still needed, I highly doubt it.
I’ve already mentioned how inflation will not be taken into account. ‘Brand New Day’ has so far sold around 75 million tickets. “The Force Awakens,” released 11 years ago, sold 110 million tickets. That’s 35 million fewer. An astounding difference. Meanwhile, “Titanic” sold an estimated 137 million domestic tickets while grossing $674 million, when tickets averaged roughly $4.50–$5 — today, the average is around $12.
