Netflix Exits Maggie Gylenhaal’s ‘The Bride,’ Starring Penélope Cruz and Christian Bale

August 21, 2023 Jordan Ruimy

The strike has seen many productions getting delayed, some even scrapped, and we can now add another production that has been orphaned.

Here’s Daniel Richtman giving us the bad news:

Netflix used the strikes to get rid of some projects including Maggie Gyllenhaal's The Bride which will now be shopped elsewhere. Penelope Cruz had the offer for The Bride and Christian Bale was attached as Doctor Frankenstein

Cruz’s involvement is news to me. We only knew about Bale and Peter Saragaard as being part of the cast. The budget being sought for this one is said to be at around $80 million.

We had reported on August 2nd that Gyllenhaal was directing a remake of “Bride of Frankenstein” for Netflix. This would be a remake of the 1935 film — the sequel to 1931’s Frankenstein.

This project is hotly anticipated, not just due to Bale’s presence, not to mention Cruz, but, moreso because Gylenhaal is behind the camera for her second feature.

Gylenhaal helmed the Netflix-backed 2021 psychological drama, “The Lost Daughter,” starring Olivia Colman, which turned out to be a critical hit. It also garnered three Oscar nominations and won Gylenhaal Best Screenplay honors at Venice.

“The Bride” was only supposed to start production during the first quarter of 2024, but now it’s looking for a new home. Will any studio bite?
