Taika Waititi’s ‘Next Goal Wins’ Exists! Trailer Released …

April 26, 2023 Jordan Ruimy

After multiple delays, which included extensive reshoots, Taika Waititi’s “Next Goal Wins” has released a trailer.

The film stars Michael Fassbender and Elisabeth Moss and was last month moved via Searchlight to a November 17th release date. Does it actually exist? Yes it does!

This means that “Next Goal Wins” will be released almost four years after shooting wrapped. Principal photography on the film began in November of 2019 and ended in January 2020. It has been in a state of limbo ever since.

Delays had initially been caused due to Armie Hammer being in the movie. Hammer got #MeToo’ed after it had already been shot. His was a side character so the movie wasn’t scrapped. Instead, Will Arnett replaced Hammer in the soccer comedy.

The situation was very similar to what was done to Kevin Spacey on “All the Money in the World,” the former had his scenes completely reshot with Christopher Plummer hired as his replacement.

To tell you the truth, the movie doesn’t look half bad. It’s fairly similar to the genre popularized by “The Bad News Bears” and “Slap Shot,” not to mention “The Mighty Ducks”, “Rookie of the Year”, “Cool Runnings” and “Remember the Titans”. I can see it playing big at TIFF and then being forgotten very quickly afterwards.

Waititi is coming off the critical drubbing his “Thor: Love and Thunder” received last year. He’s set to shoot his live-action version of “Akira” later this fall.
