Hugh Grant’s Awkward Oscar Red Carpet Interview

March 13, 2023 Jordan Ruimy

The Oscar champagne crowd is losing it over Hugh Grant’s deadpan interview at last night’s Oscar red carpet. It was most definitely an awkward 50-second chat, full of cringe.

Apparently, it’s against the rules to give genuine thoughts and honest answers. You must put on a face, and act like everything is La-Di-Da in Tinseltown.

Grant was completely disinterested Red Carpet host Ashley Graham’s questions, almost veering towards bitingly Gervais-esque humor. Yes, he could have put on a fake smile, but that’s not how Grant rolls.

My take on it is that Graham’s lame questions got the answers they deserved. There’s a fakeness to these awards show red carpets and Grant, for once, was someone who came off as deeply authentic.

He wasn't being “difficult”, as some are saying today — he didn't have a favorite film, he doesn't know who made his suit and, yes, he was in “Glass Onion” for 3-seconds.

There is nothing rude or condescending. He didn't mock her, he was just honest and brief. If anything, the whole thing played out like a parody of a Brit meeting an American.

I mean, she asked him what he was wearing when it looked quite clear, to my eyes at least, that he was in a bog standard suit.
