Christopher Nolan Wants to Move on From ‘Oppenheimer’ and Make Something “Not As Bleak”

November 17, 2023 Jordan Ruimy

Christopher Nolan is still out there talking about “Oppenheimer,” ahead of the film’s Blu-ray release next week.

However, in an interview with Yahoo, it sounds like Nolan really wants to move on. “Oppenheimer,” being about the destruction of the world and all, is probably not the most upbeat subject matter to obsess over. In Nolan’s case, it’s been over three years that’s he’s been invested in Robert J Oppenheimer and the atomic bomb.

In his own words, here’s Nolan —

“I definitely – part of me wants to leave the story behind […] subject matter is very dark. It’s nihilistic. And, yeah, there’s part of me that’s quite keen to move on and maybe do something, you know, not quite as bleak.”

Most of Nolan’s films are dark, he’s never made a light movie, but “Oppenheimer” definitely took it up a notch, that’s for sure. It was worth it — the film turned out to be an immense success, both critically and commercially.

I do have some bad news for Nolan, if you even want to call it that; “Oppenheimer” is the frontrunner to win the Oscar for Best Picture, so he probably won’t be able to let go of this movie any time soon, or, at least, until next March. I presume he’ll be campaigning these next few months with a handful of post-screening Q&As and interviews.

It’s only after March that Nolan will be able to concentrate on his next film, which might, or might not, be the next James Bond (which would most certainly be the least “bleak” film of Nolan’s career).
