Comedy-Horror ‘M3GAN’ Projected to Make $30 Million This Weekend

January 6, 2023 Jordan Ruimy

‘M3GAN’ started off its box-office run with $3M+ in previews on Thursday. Solid reviews helped a lot with a 95% on RT. There are also supposedly strong sales for Friday. The weekend should go over at around $30M, possibly in the mid-30s.

I snuck my way, at the very last minute, to a Wednesday press screening of the film after seeing the positive reviews. Know what? It’s a fun time at the movies. There’s no doubt about that. Even the usually reserved film critics at Wednesday’s screening were hooting and hollering at the picture.

It’s a totally absurd statement from director Gerard Johnstone. He knows the material he has is silly but he makes the best of it and it works. He turns it into a dark comedy with some very funny, and interesting bits, about the dangers of A.I. and the way grief should be handled with humanity rather than programmed warmth.

“M3GAN” is produced by Blumhouse who have mastered the art of small-budgeted but successful genre filmmaking. Kudos to them. The impending box-office success of “M3GAN” is again further proof that there is still a large contingent of people willing to pay for a movie ticket as long as the story suits their interests.
