BAFTA Longlist: ‘All Quiet on the Western Front’ Leads, Spielberg SNUBBED!

January 6, 2023 Jordan Ruimy

BAFTA members make up around half (325) of the UK Academy voters (650). There has definitely been a rise in the number of international voters on the Oscar race, the UK bloc is the largest, followed by various European and Scandinavian countries. So, today’s longlist does have an impact in how the Oscar nominations might turn out.

With that being said, Netflix’s WWI epic “All Quiet on the Western Front” leads this morning’s pack with 15 longlist mentions, while “The Banshees of Inisherin” follows with 14. “Everything Everywhere All At Once” and “Elvis” have 12 longlist nods while “Aftersun,” “Top Gun: Maverick,” “Babylon” and “Tár” all got eight.

The Big Picture …

Steven Spielberg misses director in a longlist of 15. That's bad. He might not be the frontrunner, especially since “The Fabelmans”only nabbed five mentions. None of its male actors got in.

Stephanie Hsu (Everything Everywhere All at Once”) snubbed. Her co-star Jamie Lee Curtis is in. I was mocked a few months ago when I said Curtis had a better shot than Hsu at getting Oscar love. It’s looking more and more likely now.

Women Talking's underperformance. Jessie Buckley and Claire Foy snubbed while Ben Whishaw gets into the weak Supporting Actor field. What irony, that the only longlisted performer of this female-led film is male.

Olivia Colman missed Best Actress for “Empire of Light”, which is the third time she's missed BAFTA for an awards-buzzed performance. UK voters don’t seem to like her all that much.

Daniel Kaluuya (“Nope”) gets in for Lead Actor. His work in that movie is incredibly underrated. He barely has much dialogue to work with, but the facial expressions and sly wit he brings to the role is brilliant.

James Cameron snubbed for Best Director. In fact, ‘The Way of Water’ vastly underperformed this morning missing Picture, Director, Cinematography, Editing and Score. The Brits have made a statement.

“Triangle of Sadness” had a great day, not only being Best Picture longlisted, but also Dolly De Leon, Woody Harrelson and Harris Dickinson all being acknowledged in their respective categories.

Margot Robbie snubbed for “Babylon.” Jessica Chastain (“The Good Nurse”) and Naomi Ackie (“I Wanna Dance With Somebody”) surprise with longlist inclusions. “Babylon” had a terrible morning. Only Brad Pitt got was mentioned in the big categories.

Ana de Armas gets recognized for “Blonde.” She’s a had some well-deserved momentum showered upon her these last few weeks and we love to see it for this unfairly maligned movie.

Tom Hanks’ polarizing “Elvis” performance recognized. Baz Luhrmann’s film did very well and had 12 nods to its name — that’s the third most of any movie. It could very well be a top five Best Picture contender.
