BAFTA Nominations: ‘All Quiet’ Leads With 14 Nominations; ‘Fabelmans’ and ‘Top Gun: Maverick’ Snubbed

January 19, 2023 Jordan Ruimy

“All Quiet on the Western Front” led this morning’s BAFTA nominations with a whopping 14 nods. If you don’t have this one as one of your final ten for the Best Picture Oscar then you haven’t been paying much attention.

“TÁR,” “The Banshees of Inisherin” and “Everything Everywhere All at Once” keep chugging along. They’ve been the most consistent players this awards season. I’m especially grateful Todd Field’s film is being recognized this widely.

Ana de Armas (Blonde) gets a Lead Actress nomination. This is major win for her. She’s had a lot of momentum these last few weeks. Will she get Oscar nominated as well?

“Top Gun: Maverick” and “The Fabelmans” snubbed. Big hit for their Oscar chances. The only nomination Spielberg’s film received was for Screenplay. Michelle Williams is nowhere to be found either. When it comes to ‘Maverick’ I didn’t expect it to do well as it’s very much a jingoistic American picture that the Brits didn’t care for too much.

“Women Talking” snubbed in everything including Adapted Screenplay, a category which many believed it was the frontrunner to win the Oscar. Sarah Polley’s film is underperforming at almost every level this awards season. It goes wide this Friday.

I think we can most certainly scratch off “Aftersun” in the Best Picture race. If the hometown BAFTAS can’t even nominate it then it’s game over for Charlotte Wells’ film.

SHOCK: Gina Prince-Bythewood (The Woman King) in as Best Director. The Director jury most likely wanted a female filmmaker in the category, but over Charlotte Wells?

All signs are pointing towards Eddie Redmayne (The Good Nurse) getting a Best Supporting Actor nod.
