Box-Office: ‘Nope’ Drops 70% in Second Weekend, Will Be Available on VOD Next Month

July 30, 2022 Jordan Ruimy

Jordan Peele’s “Nope” had a 70% drop with a $5.84 million Friday. This brings its domestic total to $67 million, the budget of the sci-fi epic is said to be around $68 million (not counting marketing costs).

“Nope” is projected to have a $17 million second-weekend gross . It’ll be at around $80 million domestically by Monday. These numbers are nowhere near “Us,” or “Get Out” levels (both films made $175 million each domestically).

From my understanding, “Nope” will be available on VOD in less than a month’s time. That’s the deal Universal struck with theaters nationwide if Peele’s film had an opening of under $50 million, which it did.

The official contractual details are that Universal can make “Nope” available on VOD during its third weekend of release, more specifically on its 17th theatrical day. I’m hearing Universal might extend the theatrical exclusivity until the film’s 30th day of release.

This is significant in that “Nope,” despite more-than-decent reviews, has underperformed. The projections just a few weeks ago had it opening with as high as a $60 million weekend. Instead, “Nope” made $44 million last weekend.

There are already people wondering if “Nope,” with its B CinemaScore, will even get to the $110 million mark. By contrast, Baz Luhrmann’s “Elvis” has made $125 million domestically.
