After much speculation, talks of a possible Netflix comeback at Cannes have yet again faltered. That means Andrew Dominik’s “Blonde,” Noah Baumbach’s “White Noise,” and Jeremy Saulnier’s “Rebel Ridge” won’t be making an appearance on the Croisette this year. I imagine Baumbach will be at Venice, that’s the big loss for Fremaux. David Fincher’s “The Killer” is said to not be ready until the very end of the year, if even that. I bet contract talks were unsuccessful, in part, because Netflix doesn’t really have a strong lineup of arthouse films this year. Alas, onto next year.
“Primetime” doesn’t really go beyond being a good movie. For all of its outrageous entertainment value, it ultimately feels like a stylishly conceived riff on a ridiculous show and its even more ridiculous host.
