DGA Nominations: Campion, Branagh, PTA, Villeneuve, Spielberg

January 27, 2022 Jordan Ruimy

I can’t say there were any major surprises with today’s Directors Guild of America noms, only that it made some things a little clearer.

The following five directors got nominated:

Kenneth Branagh, “Belfast”
Jane Campion, “The Power of the Dog”
Denis Villeneuve, “Dune”
Steven Spielberg, “West Side Story”
Paul Thomas Anderson, “Licorice Pizza”

What an exhausting day with the PGA, DGA and WGA announcing. One thing’s for sure though, we finally have a clearer picture of how the Oscar race looks like. These nine titles are practically set in stone:

The Power of the Dog
Belfast
West Side Story
Dune
King Richard
Don’t Look Up
CODA
Licorice Pizza
Tick, Tick .. Boom!

What will fill the 10 slot? Nightmare Alley? Being the Ricardos? House of Gucci?

Of course, if Ruimy had to choose the the 10 nominated films, of the last sadsack year at the movies, then they would be (in no particular order): The Power of the Dog, Licorice Pizza, Red Rocket, Annette, France, Benedetta, The Killing of Two Lovers, Memoria, and Titane.
