Woody Allen has a new movie coming out this fall, but you wouldn’t know about it since he’s become person-non-grata in the States. Hell, even his last movie, the 2018 Amazon-dumped “Rainy Day in New York,” has yet to be released here. However, that hasn’t stopped the 84-year-old director from continuing to work — Europeans have welcomed him with open arms and been willing to finance the cinematic endeavors he chooses to embark on.
His latest film, which was shot in San Sebastian, Spain, is titled “Rifkin’s Festival” and stars Christoph Waltz, Gina Gershon, Wallace Shawn, Elena Anaya, Louis Garrel, and Sergi Lopez. Tripictures has picked up the film for a fall release in Spain, and it is also now set to premiere at the San Sebastián Film Festival on September 18th as the opening night film of that event [via Variety]. Woody was last seen at the fest in 2004 when he accepted a lifetime achievement award there and also premiered “Melinda and Melinda.”
The romantic comedy follows an American married couple who head down to the San Sebastián Film Festival only to both fall for different people. The wife has an affair with a French director, whereas the husband falls for a Spanish woman. Sounds very Woody-esque.
“Rifkin’s Festival” is set to be the 48th film Woody Allen has directed in a long and illustrious career which includes classics such as “Annie Hall,” “Manhattan,” “Hannah and Her Sisters,” “Crimes & Misdemeanors,” and “The Purple Rose of Cairo.” No news yet on whether a U.S. release date will ever happen, but we’re crossing our fingers.
