Empire Magazine Names ‘Mad Max: Fury Road' the Best Film of the 21st Century

February 10, 2020 Jordan Ruimy

It’s the beginning of a whole new decade — even more impressively, we’re now, 20 years into the 21st Century. The very popular UK film magazine Empire decided to poll its readership submit their picks of the best movies since 2000. Thousands replied, in-house staff also chimed on the list, to mold it with their own picks.

George Miller’s “Mad Max: Fury Road” finished atop the poll. Surprised? Well, you bet I am. Because there is no way ‘Fury Road’ should ever be seen as the best movie released since 2000. Is it a great movie? Of course. But it is surely isn’t better than Mulholland Drive, There Will Be Blood, Tree of Life, The Death of Mr. Lazarescu, No Country For Old Men, Children of Men, Spirited Away, Cache, Twin Peaks: The Return, Uncle Boonmee, The Master …

Empire’s Best Movies of the 21st Century

  1. Mad Max Fury Road

  2. The Lord Of The Rings: The Fellowship Of The Ring

  3. The Dark Knight

  4. Inception

  5. Moonlight

  6. The Social Network

  7. Avengers: Infinity War

  8. Get Out

  9. Pan’s Labyrinth

  10. Lost in Translation

  11. There Will Be Blood

  12. No Country for Old Men

  13. Whiplash

  14. Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind

  15. Spirited Away

  16. Spider-man: Into the Spider-verse

  17. Mulholland Drive

  18. Inside Out

  19. The Wolf of Wall Street

  20. Interstellar

Obviously, based on the reading material, Empire will ultimately produce a fanboy influenced list when such a poll is taken by them — You have three Nolans, Infinity War, Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, The Lord of the Rings, all in the top 20. Not to mention, only two foreign movies (“Pan’s Labyrinth” and “Spirited Away”). Then again, I’m not complaining about any of these titles being, at the very least, very good movies (“Infinity War” excepted).

The full top 100.
