Cannes 2019: Jarmusch Confirmed as Opener. Larrain's ‘Ema' Bought by Netflix. Tarantino Might Not Make it in Time.

April 10, 2019 Jordan Ruimy

We’re getting down to the final hours when it comes to the Cannes Film Festival. Speculating these past few months has been fun, but, when all is said and done, the official lineup announcement is set to happen on April 18th. However, a few breaking items for your convenience on this Wednesday afternoon.

  • Jim Jarmusch‘s “The Dead Don’t Die” will be screened and open the 2019 Cannes Film Festival (5.14 to 5.25), and in competition — a world premiere. Nothing surprising there as we had mentioned this news item a few weeks back. Again, we’re always on the ball with these sorta things.

  • Rumor has it that Pablo Larrain’s “Ema” will not make it to Cannes because, wait for it, the film was just bought by Netflix. Ouch.

  • Finally, that rumor that I had passed along a few weeks back about Quentin Tarantino’s “Once Upon A Time In Hollywood” not being ready in time for Cannes? Well, it certainly is looking a little more credible today as now Showbiz411, writer Roger Friedman may sit out the festival due to Tarantino not being done with editing the movie. The report states that “the film isn’t currently ready and may not be ready in time for the official announcement next week or even its expected premiere in mid-May, which would have marked the 25th anniversary of Tarantino’s “Pulp Fiction” Cannes premiere.”

For the time being, I am still including Tarantino as part of the “Best Bets” section of my predictions because I do have fate he will submit it on time.
