Oscars in Tweets

February 25, 2019 Jordan Ruimy
Ellen-DeGeneres-Parody-Academy-Award-Twitter-Photo-at-the-Oscars.jpg

During the Oscars I was on Twitter, tweeting my night away, I now feel like I didn’t experience anything but tweets during the telecast. Moral of the story: Don’t tweet.

Disney lost the Best Animated Film for the first time since 2006. Congrats SPIDER-MAN: INTO THE SPIDER-VERSE!

— Jordan Ruimy (@mrRuimy) February 25, 2019

Disney’s animation, of late, has been rather meh, they have decided to concentrate on Pixar sequels rather than original content. When is the next “Inside Out” going to be released?

And the worst speech of all time goes to Vice's makeup team #Oscars

— Jordan Ruimy (@mrRuimy) February 25, 2019

Wasn’t even a close contest.

Great, right? I would have preferred Wes Anderson’s ISLE OF DOGS, but Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse is a visual groundbreaker. I can’t wait to see it again. So much detail in every single frame of that movie.

5 of the last 6 Best Director winners have been Mexican.

— Jordan Ruimy (@mrRuimy) February 25, 2019

Viva Mexico! Cuaron won his second Best Director Oscar, a true master of the medium. He also won for being his cinematographer. Is there anything this man can’t do?

How sly of the Academy to have Civil Rights icon John Lewis present a clip from GREEN BOOK. The perfect kind of damage control aimed at the inevitable backlash that was to come with its Best Picture win. #Oscars2019

— Jordan Ruimy (@mrRuimy) February 25, 2019

When I saw John Lewis coming onstage to present a clip of “Green Book” I knew the Academy was preparing for damage control when/if Peter Farrelly’s controversial race-relations buddy-comedy won Best Picture. Lewis’ introduction was very strange, he mumbled through the whole thing, maybe a little too much champagne that evening?

I love Queen but I think after tonight I'm pretty ready to go months without hearing them.

— Jordan Ruimy (@mrRuimy) February 25, 2019

The Oscars were just shoving “Bohemian Rhapsody’ down our throats all evening, not just in the ceremony,, did you see that extended “American Idol” ad with the new contestants singing a Queen song? Gawd. "

Olivia Coleman winning Best Actress for THE FAVOURITE is the right call. The first shocker of the evening and it rightfully goes to the most deserving nominee. #Oscars

— Jordan Ruimy (@mrRuimy) February 25, 2019

Only shocking surprise winner of the evening.

Is it just me or are the Oscars better without a host?

— Jordan Ruimy (@mrRuimy) February 25, 2019

These 91st Oscars ended up being one of the more watchable endeavors. Maybe it was because there was no host this go-round to make us cringe with insider Hollywood jokes and political speech. The ride wasn’t smooth, by a long shot, but it made for a more-than-delightfully delivered 3+ hour broadcast. The ratings were also higher this year, albeit, it still was the second worst-watched Oscars in history, only surpassed by last year’s telecast.

After directing such classics as DO THE RIGHT THING, MALCOLM X, THE 25TH HOUR and JUNGLE FEVER, Spike Lee is finally an Oscar winner. It took him four decades, but, hey, Hitchcock only received his honorary Oscar right before death.

— Jordan Ruimy (@mrRuimy) February 25, 2019

As the saying goes, an Oscar does not maketh the man, or something like that, but Spike Lee finally winning an Oscar was a clear highlight. Too bad he had to play sore loser once “Green Book” won.

A good time to mention that Lee Chang-Dong's masterful BURNING was not even nominated for Best Foreign Film.

— Jordan Ruimy (@mrRuimy) February 25, 2019

Disgraceful.

IF SPIDER-MAN: INTO THE SPIDERVERSE LOSES WE RIOT

— Jordan Ruimy (@mrRuimy) February 25, 2019

It won!

Let's get this over with:

Best Picture: Paddington 2
Best Director: Paul King, Paddington 2
Best Actress: Sally Hawkins, Paddington 2
Best Actor: Paddington Bear, Paddington 2
Best Sup. Actress: Julie Walters, Paddington 2
Best Sup. Actor: Paddington Bear, Paddington 2#Oscars

— Jordan Ruimy (@mrRuimy) February 25, 2019

Where was all the love for “Paddington 2”? Unjustly snubbed by the academy. A re-watch of the film is due in the Witkowski/Ruimy household. I should have actually included Hugh Grant in the Supporting Actor category, he practically stole the show, no offense Mr. Bear

Bohemian Rhapsody, where vocals regularly didn’t match up with the lip movements, definitely deserved an award for Sound Editing. #Oscars

— Jordan Ruimy (@mrRuimy) February 25, 2019

If anything, the Oscars proved that there is such a thing as too much Queen. Rami Malek winning the Best Actor Oscar for lip-synching his way through the movie was fine, I can accept that because I thought he was fine in the role, but sound editing? You would think that, at the very least, sound editing should go to a movie that perfects the synching of lips and vocals, right? In all honesty, I’ve never liked music-based movies going the lip-synch route in films, if only every rock-based musical could be like “Hedwig and the Angry Inch.”
