Oscar Buzz for Judd Apatow's ‘The King of Staten Island' is Growing ...

May 25, 2020 Jordan Ruimy

Judd Apatow’s “The King of Staten Island” has been screening for press these last two weeks. Screener links were first distributed to awards-season pundits, signifying that Universal has a lot of faith in this film’s Oscar/Golden Globes chances, then national critics received their screeners just late last week. The response has been glowing, with a colleague telling me Apatow’s first movie in over 5 years is a “total triumph” and another journalist pal comparing the “raw” drama to the ‘60s British “Kitchen Sink” genre.

Stanley Kubrick's ‘The Shining' Turns 40

May 25, 2020 Jordan Ruimy

The 40th anniversary of Stanley Kubrick’s “The Shining” was this past Saturday. The 1980 masterpiece, adapted from Stephen King’s popular novel, was bashed by critics upon release. Hell, it won Kubrick a Razzie for Worst Director. The loosely distancing adaptation even got King so upset that he famously derided the Kubrick’s movie as “misogynistic” and “cold.” While, Roger Ebert’s initially dismissive two-star review of the film in 1980 ultimately had the famous Chicago-based critic admitting to a 180-degree opinion reversal and granting it a four-star Great Movies review in 2006.

An Oscar Poker conversation with HE

May 24, 2020 Jordan Ruimy

Is “Oscar Poker” back? Not necessarily You can call this short, but short conversation I had with Hollywood Elsewhere’s Jeffrey Wells as a quarantined version of our monthly podcast, which has been on hiatus ever since the Pandemic started. The topic of discussion is the Oscars and, more importantly, the inevitable reopening of theaters, whether it’d be in 2020 or, God forbid, 2021.

Christopher Nolan's Love for ‘MacGruber' Has No Bounds

May 23, 2020 Jordan Ruimy

Count me in as someone that approves of Christopher Nolan, a man known for his self-seriousness, being a fan of the hilariously dumb 2010 comedy “MacGruber." Nolan recently told Business Insider“ I’ve been outed in the past as a ‘MacGruber‘ fan and I have to say there are a couple of moments in that film that had [me] howling uncontrollably.”

‘Capone’ Is a Hit on VOD; Takes In Staggering $2.5M+

May 22, 2020 Jordan Ruimy

Bron Studios’ Tom Hardy gangster pic “Capone” took in a 10-day gross of $2.5M in its first 10 days of release. That’s an astounding number for a movie that had countless delays to its name and ended up garnering mixed reviews upon its release.

TIFF, Venice and Telluride are Still Major Question Marks

May 22, 2020 Jordan Ruimy

Anne Thompson and Eric Kohn spoke with TIFF boss Cameron Bailey in the latest episode of their IndieWire: Screen Talk podcast. The 60-minute conversation is worth a listen just to hear how Bailey is trying to plan this year's festival. Unsurprisingly, there’s a lot of non-answers to Kohn and Thompson’s questions about how the fest will transpire because, well, nobody really knows how the world will look like in Septemeber, let alone next week. It does look as though Bailey and his staff are considering some in-person events for TIFF, exclusively just for Canadians, including outdoor screenings. The rumored digital shift online is also starting to look less likely due to push-back from some filmmakers, distributors, etc. According to Bailey, Canadians notwithstanding, the goal is to accommodate people who are unable to travel to Toronto in September with some kind of online option.

‘Military Wives': Safe, Formula-Ridden, British-Delivered Hokum [Review]

May 22, 2020 Jordan Ruimy

“Military Wives” is predictably-rendered comfort food. For some of you, as the COVID-19 pandemic rages on, this type of movie will be a welcome oasis of feel-goodness, but, for the rest of us, this fictionalized take on the true story of the wives and girlfriends of British soldiers serving in Afghanistan who formed a women’s choir to sing out their joys and fears, will be the epitome of cheese.

Christopher Nolan's ‘TENƎT': WW3, Time Travel and Spies [Trailer]

May 21, 2020 Jordan Ruimy

The most anticipated movie of the summer is still set to be released in July. Christopher Nolan is hopeful that his latest mindbender “Tenet” will be the movie event that relaunches a lagging film industry. At the moment, we are still mired in the unpredictable when it comes to the COVID-19 pandemic, will cities deem it safe enough for audiences to go back to theaters? Will sitting in a darkened room with coughers and sneezers going to cause a panic? Those are questions that just don’t have answers at the moment.

‘The Lovebirds': Not Even Kumail Nanjiani Can Elevate This Predictably Stale Rom-Com [Review]

May 21, 2020 Jordan Ruimy

Although “Lovebirds” reunites director Michael Showalter with his “The Big Sick” star-screenwriter Kumail Nanjiani, this indie rom-com delves more into genre cinema than the deft humane handling of their previous effort. A real shame, if you ask me. Showalter choosing the “high-concept” comedy “Lovebirds” as his follow-up feature is a peculiar decision and, more frustratingly, one riddled with a lack of artistic ambition. Showalter’s “The Big Sick” was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Original Screenplay back in 2018, but don’t expect “The Lovebirds” to get any kind of Oscar love — it’s a real clunker.

‘Relic’: Emily Mortimer Stars In Eerie Haunted House Movie [Trailer]

May 21, 2020 Jordan Ruimy

Although not in the same league as the very best of the genre, Natalie Erika James’ directorial debut will please plenty of genre fans this summer, hungry for new fare during the COVID-19 lockdown. Starring Emily Mortimer and produced by Jake Gyllenhaal, the film, much like “Hereditary,” deals with haunted genetics, following a daughter (Emily Mortimer) troubled by the disappearance and sudden reemergence of her elderly mother (Robyn Nevin). I won’t say more about the plot, the less you know the better.

‘The Last Dance': A Timeless Sports Opera [Review]

ESPN’s documentary series “The Last Dance” was set for release in late June, but the 10-part docu-series was fast-tracked to March when the COVID-19 pandemic started and people were hungry for not just content, but more specifically, sports-related fare. A smart decision.
