Many Oscar pundits believe I lost it by saying that Bong Joon-ho’s “Parasite” stood a good chance at, at the very least, contending for the Best Picture Oscar. But it does. Today it won two more Best Picture prizes, one from the Toronto Film Critics Association and the other, the more important one, from the prestigious Los Angeles Film Critics Association. No foreign movie has ever won the Oscar for Best Picture, but that could very well happen in February 2020.

Since I have been both an admirer and detractor of the way Netflix has treated Martin Scorsese’s “The Irishman,” it is only fitting to see what the actual viewing numbers are for Scorsese’s magnum opus. Of course, a proper theatrical release in thousands of locations would have been ideal for this movie, but then again, “The Irishman” wouldn’t exist without Netflix deciding to churn out $160 million for the film — something other big studios refused to do. If the early reports of viewership are accurate, it seems that a lot of people actually sat down to watch the 3.5-hour movie.

The only one of those movies to star non-white characters is Bong Joon-ho’s “Parasite,” and acting nominations do not favor any non-white actors/actresses either. It's definitely not impossible for a non-white actor to get a nomination this year — longshots include Jamie Foxx in “Just Mercy,” Awkwafina in “The Farewell” and Lupita Nyong’o in “Us,” other than that it looks as though it’ll be another rough year for African-American creatives at the Oscars.
