Queen biopic “Bohemian Rhapsody” delivered great numbers at the week-end box-office with a $50M debut. The rock biopic has thus been reborn. I found the film's strongest moments to be the musical sections, which had the band putting together some of their most well-known songs in the studio and, of course, an 11 minute recreation of their legendary 1985 Live Aid performance.

Texas congressional candidate Dan Crenshaw was badly wounded in the eye during his third tour in Afghanistan as a Navy SEAL, he wears an eye-patch for that reason. Do I agree with “Saturday Night Live” comic Pete Davidson poking fun at the eye-patch in a skit that aired this past weekend? Of course not. We shouldn't make fun of any veteran's battle wounds. Davidson can say or do what he pleases, it's all about free speech as far as I'm concerned, something we badly need in comedy. However, I will say this, that doesn't mean Davidson's joke wasn't done in poor taste.

An adaptation of Garrard Conley’s 2016 memoir about gay conversion therapy, writer-director Joel Edgerton's "Boy Erased" is a well-intentioned but maudlin attempt at Oscar-bait. Edgerton's film tackles the case of Jared Eamons, an Arkansas teen (Lucas Hedges), with conservative Christian parents, including his dad Marshall (Russell Crowe), a Baptist minister who has a knack, like many ministers do, of taking the bible a tad-too-literally. Mom Nancy (Nicole Kidman) is the sane voice of reason, but not enough to prevent Jared from being shipped off to a gay conversion therapy center when dad finds out that his son is gay. Nancy's reluctance is eventually turned into agreement with hubby when church leaders advise her it's the right thing to do, Jared needs to be 'cured.'

Any new work by the Coens should instantly be an automatic must-see for any serious cinephile. 'Buster Scruggs' is no exception. I've decided to review each of the six segments 0f the film and rate them based on their own merits. It's the only way to truly dissect the latest work from a directing duo that has become, quite possibly, the best working filmmakers in the world.

Not to mention audiences are digging the hell out of this movie with an A grade on CinemaScore and astonishing 8.4 rating on IMDB (based on 34k votes). However, the reviews from critics were weak. The movie has a mediocre 59% on Rotten Tomatoes (based on 237 reviews).

Listen, director Rian Johnson could have easily taken over the director's chair for Episode IX, but Disney decided otherwise. They opted for JJ Abrams, who was the brainchild behind this trilogy and probably saw Johnson starting to interfere too much with his original vision of the way things should be going in the story. Johnson's risk-taking was a breath of fresh air, but I never doubted that we'd be going back to business as usual with Abrams hopping on-board Episode IX. It had to go back to normality, especially after the backlash from longtime fans due to what Johnson concocted in"The Last Jedi." It made $300M less than Abrams' "The Force Awakens," which is probably due to hardcores not going to see it a second or third time in theaters, like they normally would with any other Star Wars movie, because, well, they were not happy with what they say the first time around.

Hollywood is at it again, deciding to make an English-language remake of a soon-to-be-classic foreign film.
Deadline is reporting that Will Ferrell and Julia Louis-Dreyfus are attached to star in the upcoming Fox Searchlight film “Downhill,” which is an English-language remake of the Swedish film “Force Majeure.” The film is set to be directed by the duo of Nat Faxon and Jim Rash ("The Descendants," "The Way Way Back") and scripted by “Four Lions” writer Jesse Armstrong.

Enter the hiring of director Daniel Sackheim, known for directing several episodes of FX‘s “The Americans,” and Pizzolatto himself who would be directing around 60% of the show. Good God. You go from hiring a cinematic talent such as Saulnier to getting a TV director to replace him?

What can occur in such a battle is an apocalyptic-like sensation that has an ADD intensity and a cause/effect of whiplash.

Earlier today, IFC announced that Lars von Trier's "The House That Jack Built" will be getting a special release later this year. Two versions of the film will be screened — the “director’s cut” that was shown at Cannes and the “R-rated cut” that is supposed to be 'tamer,' at least by Lars von Trier standards. Both will be available on VOD and in select theaters. However, what most people are talking about today is not the IFC release announcement but rather a promotional campaign that had film journalists being robocalled at random by a creepy voice. This was most definitely a prank call and the victims are none too pleased about it, describing it as “creepy,” “aggressive,” “terrible,” and “twisted.”
