‘Rafiki' is the first Pro-LGBTQ Movie Made in Kenya [Review]

April 17, 2019 Jordan Ruimy

You will read people raving about the importance of a movie like “Rafiki“ even existing and I can understand and agree with that. This is an openly pro-LGBTQ movie financed in a country that is a vehemently homophobic and, for that, a movie such as this one should no doubt exist. However, the meandering plot and contrived romance at the heart of this film does the film’s outer importance a major disservice.

Belgian Film ‘Girl’ Accused of Being a “Danger to the Transgender Community”; Its Trans Star Responds

I thought Lukas Dhont's "Girl" was one of the surprises of Cannes' Un Certain Regard program back in May. I wrote in my review:

"From its very first moments, the beautifully controlled and artful “Girl” – the feature debut of young Belgian director Lukas Dhont – grips and takes hold. This deeply emphatic portrayal of a trans teen has an expressive camera that observes and listens, rather than forces you to succumb to emotions. The trajectory of the story’s protagonist, Lara, who is determined to become a ballet dancer despite feeling trapped in a body she doesn’t recognize, sounds a little exploitative on paper, but the end result is quite the opposite. Sensitively rendered cinema with a capital C, “Girl” features a lovely naturalism and an attention to detail so delicately constructed characters feel like full flesh and blood."

Queen biopic “Bohemian Rhapsody” has delivered great numbers at the week-end box-office. When all is said and done, it will have delivered a $50M debut. The rock biopic has been reborn! Not to mention audiences are digging the hell out of this movie with an A grade on CinemaScore and astonishing 8.4 rating on IMDB (based on 34k votes). However, the reviews from critics were weak. The movie has a mediocre 59% on Rotten Tomatoes (based on 237 reviews).
