Paul Schrader’s ‘Master Gardener’ Being Released on May 19th

March 3, 2023 Jordan Ruimy

Paul Schrader's Master Gardener now has a confirmed US release date of Friday, May 19th 2023 via Magnolia Pictures. Although, it is probably limited.

Schrader had told Eliza Davis back in November that it was being released the last week of March. Change of plans, it seems. The film will be coming out when a lot of film press will be at Cannes.

Magnolia Pictures bought Schrader’s latest a few months after its Venice premiere.

Reviews for “Master Gardener” haven’t been as rousing as those that met “The Card Counter” or “First Reformed,” but no serious cinephile would dare miss this latest cinematic provocation from Schrader.

One thing I’ve noticed from this trilogy of Bresson-inspired films is that all three leads not only write in a diary, but they also have the same short gel-brushed to the side haircut. I’m loving it.

Schrader’s 5-decade filmmaking career, counts his incredible scripts for “Taxi Driver,” “Rolling Thunder,” “Raging Bull,” “The Last Temptation of Christ” and “Bringing Out the Dead.”

In no particular order, the 5 greatest directorial achievements of Schrader’s career: “Blue Collar,” “Mishima,” “Affliction,” “Auto Focus,” and “First Reformed.”
