Luca Guadagnino doesn’t make short movies. His latest, “Artificial,” is yet another example of the indulgence he tends to bring to all of his films. Guadagnino allows himself to linger on his subjects, ideas, and characters far longer than most filmmakers would.
According to NYFF, “Artificial,” Guadagnino’s tackling of the rise of OpenAI and Sam Altman, clocks in at 2 hours 20 minutes, that’s 140 minutes, which is, give or take, a minute longer than the filmmaker’s last film, “After the Hunt,” which did not do well with critics, or audiences— it sits at 36% on RT, and 5.7/10 on IMDb.
In fact, none of Guadagnino movies of the last 20 years has gone under the two hour mark, including “Queer” (137 minutes), “A Bigger Splash” (125 min), “Suspiria” (152 minutes), “Bones and All” (131 min), “Challengers” (131 min), and “Call Me By Your Name” (132 min).
“Artificial,” which is set to premiere at the New York Film Festival on October 5, was dropped by Amazon/MGM, and now resides at Neon. The film stars Andrew Garfield, Yura Borisov, Monica Barbaro, Ike Barinholtz, Cooper Hoffman, Jason Schwartzman and Chris O’Dowd. It will hit theaters in late December.
