Ah, yes — the neverending saga of the next ‘Fast & Furious’ movie, which has been plagued by delays, and Universal demanding Vin Diesel cut the budget by almost $150M.
Another plot twist has come to us.
A few weeks ago, Louis Leterrier, who is supposed to direct “Fast Forever,” gave a cryptic answer when asked about whether the film would be happening, and now Diesel is seemingly teasing that he may take the job of director for the 12th and final movie in the ‘Fast’ Saga.
Not kidding. Diesel went to his Instagram — where else? — posting a black-and-white picture of a famous ‘Fast & Furious’ car, and he used the caption, “Director… Hmmm…,” hinting that he may pull double-duty as the movie’s lead star and director.
Why is Diesel doing this? Kind of a slap to the face of Leterrier, if you ask me. Now, of course, Diesel’s Instagram posts aren’t always to be taken at face value — but why even do this?
Diesel would become the eighth man to sit in the ‘Fast & Furious’ chair; Justin Lin previously directed five of the first 10 movies, and six other directors took on one movie each (Rob Cohen, John Singleton, James Wan, F. Gary Gray, David Leitch, and Louis Leterrier).
Diesel has only directed one feature-length film, that would be “Strays” (1997). Is he competent enough to direct the final ‘Fast’ bonanza? It would be a full-circle moment, an odd plot twist for a final instalment that’s been filled with ups and (mostly) downs.
Remember Vin Diesel, the actor who absolutely stole the show in Sidney Lumet’s “Find Me Guilty”? Yeah, some folks might not — that was a great performance, but since then he’s been all about these ‘Fast’ movies, barely flexing his acting chops in anything else, unless you count Groot in ‘Guardians of the Galaxy’ or “Babylon AD” or “The Last Witch Hunter” as acting flexes.
