Here’s another look at Kate and Rooney Mara as twins in Werner Herzog’s “Bucking Fastard,” which screens for press tonight at the Venice Film Festival. As far as we know, no U.S. distributor has acquired the film just yet, which means there’s still no release date — though that could change soon if the film is well-received at Venice.
The image shows Jean and Joan, played by the Maras, in that infamous cave, which will play a central part in the story. They are searching for an imaginary land where true love is possible, and they dig a tunnel through a mountain range.
In fact, Herzog filmed major scenes in Postojna Cave in Slovenia, which he described as an extraordinary setting and the film’s symbolic “core of the Earth.”
Herzog’s film is the only title of the fall to screen at Venice, Telluride, TIFF and NYFF. It will also play at San Sebastian. Inspired by a true story, “Bucking Fastard” stars Rooney and Kate Mara as sisters who are in total sync as they live by their own social and emotional standards and rules. The ensemble cast also includes Orlando Bloom and Domhnall Gleeson.
