Amy Madigan Joins Tom Hanks in Marielle Heller’s ‘The Comebacker’

Marielle Heller is putting the finishing touches on the ensemble of her next film, “The Comebacker,” a baseball movie that recently received a July 30, 2027, release date via Sony Pictures.

Amy Madigan, fresh off her Oscar-winning performance in “Weapons,” has joined the cast. This won’t be Madigan’s first rodeo with baseball — she, of course, starred in 1989’s “Field of Dreams” alongside Kevin Costner.

“The Comebacker” now has quite the cast: Tom Hanks, Callum Turner, Amy Madigan, Patricia Clarkson, Colman Domingo, and Bad Bunny.

Based on a short story by Dave Eggers, “The Comebacker” was scripted by Heller and is described as a love letter to baseball. The film marks Hanks’ return to the sport for the first time since “A League of Their Own,” nearly 35 years ago.

In “The Comebacker,” Hanks plays a struggling sportswriter who regains his passion after a minor-league pitcher is called up. Following a head injury from a line drive, the pitcher begins speaking in poetic ways that inspire Lionel’s work and captivate readers. The original story centers on the San Francisco Giants, though the screenplay may shift the setting to the New York Mets.

According to Deadline, “Madigan plays the owner of the team, whose pitching coach is played by Hanks. Patricia Clarkson plays the coach’s wife.”

Heller’s debut was the 2015 Sundance sensation “The Diary of a Teenage Girl.” This was followed by the equally acclaimed “Can You Ever Forgive Me?” She then dabbled in mainstream filmmaking with the mostly enjoyable “A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood,” followed by the much-delayed “Nightbitch.”
