Anton Corbijn’s “A Talent For Murder” (formerly “Switzerland”), the Dutch filmmaker’s first narrative feature in eleven years, was recently acquired by Bleecker Street and set for an October 23 release. A TIFF world premiere is coming, and we now have a trailer.
Starring Helen Mirren, the film reimagines the final chapter of Patricia Highsmith’s life through a fictional encounter with an ambitious young literary agent, played by Alden Ehrenreich.
Based on Joanna Murray-Smith’s 2014 play “Switzerland,” the story follows the agent as he travels from New York to the novelist’s isolated Swiss retreat with a seemingly simple mission: convince the notoriously private Highsmith to return to her most famous creation and write one final Tom Ripley novel. Olivia Cooke also stars as Highsmith’s guide, who becomes entangled in the increasingly tense encounter.
The script, described as a “thriller,” was written by author-turned-screenwriter Joanna Murray-Smith (1988’s “Georgia”) and “promises a mixture of suspense and psychological depth, reflecting Highsmith’s haunting literary style.”
None other than Robbie Ryan serves as cinematographer on this one. He’s been the DP on Yorgos Lanthimos’ last four films, but has taken a break from that partnership.
Corbijn, a noted photographer-turned-director, who also happened to direct some iconic music videos, is known for “Control,” “A Most Wanted Man” and “The American.” As previously mentioned, “A Talent For Murder” is his first feature since 2015’s “Life.”
