Sacha Baron Cohen started shooting a new Ali G movie in 2023. Save for Cohen being reportedly spotted in character in England in July and September of 2025, the film appears to have been shot in secret, with no trades reporting on the project until very recently.
Now we have more details, and a trailer. Titled “Ali G: Who Iz I,” the film is set for a theatrical release from Amazo/MGM Studios on October 23, and will mark Cohen’s feature directorial debut.
After a 20-year hiatus spent "chillin’, tokin’ and bonin’,"Ali G is back and horrified to discover that in his absence, "the world went to crap"—blaming everything from "co wars" to the rise of Ed Sheeran. Desperate to "get back on top," he decides to embark on "a brand new thing called a documentary," promising that for the first time, it's "real people, not actors.”
Cohen was a comedy revolutionary in the early 2000s with “Da Ali G Show,” creating Borat, Brüno, and Ali G — characters who blurred the line between performance and reality, exposed people’s biases, and turned culture clashes into sharp social satire. Back then, Cohen was hailed as a genius, the kind of force that could change humor forever. Now, he wants to dip his toes back into that territory. The trailer is amusing, but can Cohen make the character relevant again?
