Adam Wingard Says ‘Onslaught’ A “Spiritual Sequel” to ‘The Guest’: “Takes Place in the Same Town”

Adam Wingard has confirmed rumors that “Onslaught” is set in the same universe as “The Guest,” validating a popular fan theory.

Speaking at San Diego Comic-Con, Wingard described the new film as the final piece of a trilogy alongside “You’re Next” and “The Guest.” While “Onslaught” is not a direct sequel following the same characters, it shares the same world and expands on ideas introduced in the 2014 film.

According to Wingard, “Onslaught” takes place in the same town as “The Guest.” He explained that the secret government programs featured in the new film are connected to the same covert experimentation that created David, the super-soldier portrayed by Dan Stevens in the 2014 film.

Wingard even acknowledged that audiences could “technically call this a sequel” because of the shared universe.

Adria Arjona leads the film as a struggling mother living in a trailer park who sets out to protect her loved ones from a rogue squad of genetically engineered super-soldiers that have escaped from a secret military base while mercenaries attempt to contain them.

The trailer certainly hints at this being a quintessential Adam Wingard movie, and the fact that his longtime writing partner, Simon Barrett, is back makes this a must-see in my book. Arjona is described in the synopsis as a “badass army sniper,” evoking shades of a Sarah Connor-esque heroine.

Rebecca Hall and Dan Stevens also star in “Onslaught,” alongside Michael Biehn (!), Reginald VelJohnson, Eric Wareheim, Drew Starkey, and Alex “Poatan” Pereira.

Wingard is coming off “Godzilla vs. Kong” and “Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire,” the latter of which grossed more than $572 million worldwide. It’s a real shame that Wingard decided to devote so much of his creative energy to giant monster movies.
