A casting grid on Production Weekly has Daniel Scheinert and Daniel Kwan’s mystery sci-fi movie going by the title “Thasnagar” — check below.
Now, if “Thasnagar” is the real title (and, to be clear, it has not been officially confirmed by Universal), it’s an unusual name, since it doesn’t correspond to any well-known English word, place, or mythological figure. The suffix “-nagar” means “city,” so “Thasnagar” could mean “the city of Thas.” I wouldn’t put it past the Daniels to invent a civilization or dimension from scratch.
Of course, until the title is officially announced, all of this remains speculation. The rumored name gives us a flavor of what to expect, but not enough evidence to infer the actual plot.
What we do know is that the cast will include Matt Damon, Sandra Oh, Charles Melton, and Michael Gandolfini, alongside the film’s five young leads: Sean Kaufman, Silvia Dionicio, Jackson Kelly, Kerrice Brooks, and Thalia Dudek.
Although plot details remain under wraps, at least officially, the upcoming untitled film is essentially a “superhero tentpole with global warming as the villain.” The story reportedly jumps between two timelines—one set in the 1980s and the other in the present day—with the ’80s storyline centered on a group of youngsters. Damon and Oh reportedly play the parents of one of the teens.
“Thasnagar,” if that is indeed its name, is scheduled to hit theaters on November 19, 2027, via Universal.
