If you can believe it, Matt Damon has not given up on Bourne. He’s now saying that he might be close to cracking a worthy story for the next instalment.
While appearing on The Rich Eisen Show, Damon said that he’s been working on the project with director Edward Berger, trying to nail down the story, and that “a line of sight” has appeared for Bourne’s return.
I’m talking to—there’s a great director named Ed Berger. He did ‘All Quiet on the Western Front.’ He’s a wonderful director, and we’re talking about it. We’re just trying to figure out—we’re trying to nail the story down. Because I’d love to do it.
The reason it’s taken so long to make another film has to do with Damon’s insistence that the next movie be worthy of the first three installments while also finding somewhere fresh and necessary to take the story.
If we do it, we want it to be like the first three. It’s not built like a James Bond, where every movie is its own mission.
Damon sounds fairly positive about where he and Berger are in terms of finding the right story.
Well, I hope we can crack it. I think we have a line of sight on how to do it.”
Back in September, Berger told THR he was still on board to direct the next Bourne movie and that it all depended on Damon being satisfied with the script.
I will do it if Matt [Damon] wants to do it. If we can really have the feeling that we are adding something new to the great Bourne films that were already. That will be necessary to make Matt want to do it, and to make me want to do it.
Back in March 2025, Universal reacquired the rights to the Bourne franchise, with the goal of “reviving” the IP, possibly as a reboot. The last we heard, the latest draft of the script had been penned by Joe Barton (Black Doves).
Through five movies, the Bourne franchise has racked up $1.64 billion at the global box office. The first three—Identity, Supremacy, and Ultimatum—were the best of the series, while the last two were so lukewarm that they ended up deflating any excitement or anticipation for a potential sixth installment.
Bourne last appeared nearly a decade ago in 2016’s Jason Bourne, which also marked Paul Greengrass’ return to the franchise. Critical reception was cool, but it still earned more than $400 million at the global box office.
