Every day, “Obsession” posts another number that should be impossible. And every day, the industry, the “experts,” respond with disbelief. At some point, this film’s numbers are going to decrease, right?
On Tuesday, the Focus release grossed another $5.7M from 2781 locations, a remarkable 4% increase over the previous Tuesday — in fact, it’s the best Tuesday tally in its four-week run. Its domestic total now stands at $117M, and what’s most striking isn’t the total itself, but how the movie continues to behave as if normal box office rules don’t apply.
Most movies spend their theatrical runs slowly fading from relevance after opening weekend. “Obsession” seems to have skipped that memo entirely. The film keeps evolving into what is now a genuine cultural event. Week after week, audiences keep showing up, some for the first time, others for a rewatch, and the film keeps delivering boosts that have never been seen before.
What’s particularly fascinating is how difficult the movie has become to forecast. It posted straight week-over-week increases, with the last one, this past Friday through Sunday, being $27M. At this point, the box office rulebook has been thrown out when it comes to this film, and I would not be surprised if another increase occurs this coming weekend.
