Curry Barker’s “Obsession” is starting to slow down at the box office, ever so slightly. The film earned $14M in its sixth weekend of release, a 25% drop. That’s still mighty impressive. It has now reached a $216M domestic total and a $330M+ global tally.
It came to the point where Focus Features had scheduled a digital release for June 2 and subsequently scrapped the date. Word was that a 45-day exclusive theatrical window — a privilege usually reserved for Universal’s biggest blockbusters — was going to be given to “Obsession.”
The 45 days are soon up, and it has been announced that “Obsession” will be made available digitally next Tuesday, June 30. That’s exactly 45 days during which the film played exclusively in theaters. Not bad for a tiny indie that was originally planned to hit VOD after just 18 theatrical days.
Of course, I was hoping for more than 45 days, but that’s the post-pandemic reality. Even so, compared to other blockbusters, it’s been a sturdy rollout on the part of Focus. The film will probably reach $400M+ by the end if its run. The budget was only $750k.
