Sandra Oh has joined the Daniels’ secretive new “event film” at Universal, according to Deadline.
The project, which remains untitled and largely under wraps, recently landed Matt Damon in its first major casting announcement. Oh and Damon are reportedly set to play parents.
Oh, best known for her Emmy-winning performance on “Grey’s Anatomy” and as the titular protagonist in “Killing Eve,” was recently seen in the comedy “Good Fortune” opposite Keanu Reeves and HBO’s “The Sympathizer.” In my world, however, she will forever be etched in memory for her wonderful turn in Alexander Payne’s “Sideways.”
Despite there being no official plot details, reporting has described the film as a “superhero tentpole with global warming as the villain.” The story reportedly jumps between two timelines — one set in the 1980s and the other in the present day — with the ’80s storyline centered on a group of teenagers. Damon and Oh would reportedly play the parents of one of the teens.
The Daniels have been developing the film for years following the success of “Everything Everywhere All at Once.” Originally slated for release on June 12, 2026, the project quietly disappeared from Universal’s schedule last year, fueling rumors of creative overhauls. Kwan has since confirmed that the script has been reworked to adapt to constant changes in the world.
This is a major swing for Universal Pictures, carrying a budget reportedly in the $150 million range. The same can be said for the Daniels, who haven’t released a film since their 2022 Best Picture Oscar winner, “Everything Everywhere All at Once.”
The film is scheduled to hit theaters on November 19, 2027.
