‘American Psycho’ Director Mary Harron Says No One Can Replace Christian Bale in Luca Guadagnino’s New Version

June 17, 2026 Jordan Ruimy

We all know Luca Guadagnino is dead serious about directing his version of “American Psycho,” which has resulted in an incalculable amount of rumors about who could step into the shoes of Patrick Bateman.

The more pertinent question, as far as I’m concerned, is who would actually even try? Christian Bale absolutely nailed the role in Mary Harron’s 2000 adaptation.

In an interview with Dread Central, Harron was asked about the remake and who she would cast as Patrick Bateman in 2026. However, Harron believes it’s a losing proposition for Guadagnino — you can’t replicate what Bale did.

[Christian Bale] is so firmly set in my mind, I can’t imagine anyone else doing it […] I can’t imagine anyone else in the main role.

So, whoever gets cast in the role — Jacob Elordi, Austin Butler, or anybody else — Bateman will forever and always be Christian Bale in Harron’s eyes, and mine as well. It’s an iconic performance, and one that cannot be replicated.

Bale’s performance in “American Psycho” was incredible — a role he was born to play, and one that casts a long shadow over anyone who dares to follow. He perfectly balanced icy control with manic absurdity. Every gesture, smile, and monologue felt obsessively precise. It’s a cultural landmark of acting.

“American Psycho” author Brett Easton Ellis recently mentioned on his podcast that, based on what he’s hearing, a handful of A-listers passed on the role for Guadagnino’s film. His theory was, quite simply, that nobody wants to take on Bale:

A couple of high profile actors — whom I can’t name — have turned it down. I think maybe because they don’t want to be in the shoes of Christian Bale.

Scott Z. Burns is adapting Ellis’ 1991 novel, which shocked readers with its graphic depictions of a Manhattan psychopath. Lionsgate is producing.
