I just got out of Nicolas Winding Refn’s “Her Private Hell,” so I’ll add more thoughts to this later when I’ve had time to sit with it. But honestly, as someone who’s defended Refn for years — especially “Drive” and “The Neon Demon” — this latest film is borderline unwatchable.
There’s only so far gorgeous visuals and an incredible score can carry a movie before you realize there’s barely any story to hold onto, and you completely disengage. Critics are going to absolutely demolish this film, which isn’t new to Refn, but I don’t think I can defend him this time around.
Full reviews should start dropping soon, but the early reactions have been rough. A backlash definitely seems to be building, and the screening itself got scattered boos. This is basically Nicolas Winding Refn making a film for Nicols Winding Refn, and we’re just caught in the crossfire. I’ll have more soon.
