Last night, Amazon/MGM confirmed the sequel would be titled “Spaceballs: The New One,” with much of the original cast returning, including Rick Moranis. Amazon/MGM set it for theatrical release on April 23, 2027.
Rick Moranis, 72, actually showed up at the event. He stepped away from the industry in the late 1990s to focus on raising his children after his wife passed away. He never formally retired but has been turning down roles and interviews for over three decades now. Apparently, “Spaceballs 2” was too good to pass on.
Moranis had a string of beloved comedic roles from the 1980s and early 1990s and, with “Spaceballs” included, is best known for “Ghostbusters,” “Little Shop of Horrors,” “Honey, I Shrunk the Kids,” “Parenthood,” and “The Flintstones.”
Cheekily described as “A Non-Prequel Non-Reboot Sequel Part Two but with Reboot Elements Franchise Expansion Film,” the sequel will be directed by Josh Greenbaum (“Barb and Star Go to Vista Del Mar”), with a script co-written by Josh Gad, who will also produce and has spearheaded this passion project for many years now.
“Spaceballs: The New One” is set to star Moranis, Josh Gad, Mel Brooks, Bill Pullman, George Wyner, and Daphne Zuniga, with new actors including Keke Palmer, Lewis Pullman, and Anthony Carrigan.
Mel Brooks, who will be turning 100 in June, is set to reprise his role as Yogurt, a riff on Yoda and alien mentor to original protagonist Lone Starr (Bill Pullman). He’s released a video message about “Spaceballs: The New One,” and he looks and sounds great—still funny as hell.
