Takashi Yamazaki’s ‘Grandgear’ Sets 2028 Release With First Footage Revealing Massive Robot Battle

April 13, 2026 Jordan Ruimy

Back in November 2024, it was announced that “Godzilla Minus One” director Takashi Yamazaki was going to direct his first English-language film over at Sony. Bad Robot’s J.J. Abrams will produce.

At the time, plot details were being kept under wraps, but some information has now emerged at CinemaCon for Takashi’s “Grandgear,” which is now set for a February 28, 2028 release. Furthermore, brief footage was shown of two gigantic Transformers-like robots duking it out in a city.

In the meantime, and before he tackles mechs, Takashi has his sequel, “Godzilla Minus Zero,” set to debut in North American theaters on November 6 via Toho and GKIDS. Yamazaki is returning to direct and will again handle writing and visual effects duties.
