Here now is the trailer for “Supergirl.”
What can I say? Jason Momoa seems to having a great time playing Lobo, much more so than in those Aquaman movies. There’s swagger and charisma here.
What else.. Krypto is apparently in danger, he needs to be saved, but don’t worry — there’s almost zero chance he won't survive.
Visually, there’s this odd brown, muted palette; where’s the comic’s colorful aesthetics? Does it have to do with budget? “Supergirl” cost $100M, which is a tad on the lower end of the usual superhero blockbuster.
Of course, given this is James Gunn’s DCU, the trailer has the style and vibe of ‘Guardians of the Galaxy,’ it’s a road movie in space. Milly Alcock’s portrayal of Kara Will certainly not disappoint. It’s perfect casting.
Directed by Craig Gillespie (”I, Tonya,” “Cruella”), produced by James Gunn —the latter’s influence on tone is definitely there —I’m just wondering if Gillespie will have the chops to balance the action with humor and style. Not to mention what looks like a generic villain, and really, most importantly, whether the superhero tropes will feel repetitive.
In case you missed my weekend report,“Supergirl” has already undergone at least eight test screenings, more than most studio films in recent memory, and several versions have been shown with three different endings and multiple composers attached as the movie continues to evolve in the run‑up to release. The latest cut reportedly runs about 1 hour, 50 minutes and has been described as a “space western” or “True Grit in Space.”
“Supergirl” hits theaters on June 26.
