Well, that was fast.
In one of the least surprising sequel confirmations, “The Housemaid 2” is not only happening, but according to its director, Paul Feig, on the Oscars red carpet, the script is in, he’s doing a rewrite, and “we start shooting in the fall.”
Feig further confirmed that Sydney Sweeney is coming back, along with Italian actor Michele Morrone, who also starred in Feig’s “Another Simple Favor.” Amanda Seyfried will only have a cameo in this one.
“The Housemaid,” which only cost $35M, has grossed nearly $400M worldwide. The sequel, titled “The Housemaid’s Secret,” is based on the second novel in Freida McFadden’s best-selling trilogy. Screenwriter Rebecca Sonnenshine will return to adapt the sequel.
Back in January, at the Palm Springs International Film Festival, Seyfried confirmed that a “Housemaid” sequel was all but “guaranteed” and that she was going to have a “small cameo” in it, because the second book is more about Sweeney’s character and her working for a new family.
“The Housemaid” is based on an ultra-popular book—described as a “monster hit”—written by Freida McFadden. Translated into over forty languages, the book has gained huge traction on social media, especially TikTok, and has so far sold 4.5 million copies. In fact, there are four a total of books in the series, which means if sequel is successful then expect more movies to come.
I gather the sequel will probably want to maintain the same holiday release date as the first one. Scrolling through next year’s calendar, I suspect that a December 17, 2027 release date is all but sealed for “The Housemaid’s Secret.”
