Sony’s Spider-Verse set of films struggled throughout its run, with “Kraven the Hunter” serving as the final nail in the coffin for the studio’s misbegotten Spider-Man antihero franchise, which included Kraven, Venom, “Morbius,” and “Madame Web.”
A December 2024 report from The Wrap revealed that Sony scrapped plans for future live-action Marvel spinoffs, a decision that proved costly as the studio lost over $465 million — and that was even before ‘Kraven’ hit theaters and underperformed — while audience interest declined with each release.
“The biggest issue with the Sony Spider-Man spinoffs seems to be the lack of quality control. The movies just aren’t good,” a Sony insider told The Wrap.
Now, in an interview with The Town podcast, Sony CEO Tom Rothman confirmed plans to reboot the live-action Sonyverse/Spider-Verse world. Does this mean fresh takes on “Morbius,” “Madame Web,” and “Kraven the Hunter”? Certainly. Rothman remained vague about details.
Still, when asked if “Morbius” and Kraven would be part of these future plans, Rothman confirmed that Sony intends to “go back to those” at some point. When asked if this would be a “fresh reboot” with “new people,” Rothman said “yes.”
No additional information was provided, leaving the scope of the reboot uncertain and the release timeline unknown. But there are “plans,” which is bad news for anyone still scarred by what they’ve seen over the past 10 years.
That said, this latest development isn’t exactly shocking. Sony is obligated to keep churning out Spider-Man–related movies to maintain the rights to the character. And with several entries in its Spider-Man-adjacent slate either bombing commercially or receiving poor critical response, a full reset may very well be the studio’s smartest — and only — option.
