A beautiful retro poster for David Fincher's "The Further Mis-Adventures of Cliff Booth" has started showing up in theaters, and you can see it below. Netflix hasn't technically unveiled it; the poster has simply popped up in theater lobbies.
‘Cliff Booth’ opens on November 25, over Thanksgiving weekend, exclusively on around 350 IMAX screens. We're about seven weeks out, and there's been barely any buzz. The rollout has been weak, especially for a movie built around Tarantino, Fincher, and Pitt.
Has Netflix cooled on this thing? It's a fair question to ask. Maybe I'm wrong, and I hope I am. It's still one of my most anticipated titles, but the footage so far has barely traveled. Also, when is this screening for press? Does Netflix not see ‘Cliff Booth’ as a potential awards player?
There have been rumblings that Fincher needed reshoots to get the film where he wanted it, and that's reportedly why it skipped the fall festivals. Before that, Venice had been in discussions to world premiere the film. I do wonder if the always-meticulous Fincher is still tinkering in the edit. That’s an absolute possibility.
The poster also confirms that Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross are back with Fincher on the score. Good news there, at least. Reznor and Ross are among the most acclaimed film composers of the last decade, and they've been Fincher's go-to musical collaborators on five of his films: "The Social Network," "The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo," "Gone Girl," "Mank," and "The Killer."
Alongside Pitt, the ‘Cliff Booth’ cast includes Elizabeth Debicki, Scott Caan, Carla Gugino, Yahya Abdul-Mateen II, and Peter Weller.
I recently posted plot details for ‘Cliff Booth,’ and they didn't even come from Netflix, which still hasn't officially confirmed what the film is about. In a nutshell, the story takes place in 1977, eight years after "Once Upon a Time… in Hollywood." Cliff (Pitt) works as a bartender and projectionist while moonlighting as a Hollywood fixer. Agent Karen Crosby (Debicki) hires him on behalf of her client, TV star Charlie Peters (Caan). That draws Cliff into a noir-tinged world that includes Charlie's wife Toni (Gugino), football-star-turned-actor "Hot Rod" Harrison (Abdul-Mateen II), and the gangster Verdusco brothers.
It's a knotty plot, and maybe Netflix has a big trailer coming that will clear things up. Maybe there really is a plan to market this movie. Right now, though, it's been way too quiet.
The shame of it is that ‘The Bone Temple’ ends on a cliffhanger that sets up Cillian Murphy's return as Jim, the whole reason a lot of people showed up for this revival.
