"Avengers: Endgame" has reclaimed the title of highest-grossing movie of all time, reaching $2.925 billion worldwide after its "Encore" re-release. That puts it just ahead of James Cameron's "Avatar," which sat at $2.923 billion heading into this run. A margin of roughly $2M.
"Avengers: Endgame Encore" opened in theaters last weekend. The new cut runs 185 minutes, four minutes longer than the original, and includes a custom introduction, and new footage. Joe Russo described it as a "critical companion story" to the original, which basically means it's a three-hour commercial for "Avengers: Doomsday," opening December 18.
The film opened last weekend at $86M worldwide, the second-biggest global opening ever for a re-release, behind only the 2012 3D return of "Titanic". Domestically, it topped the weekend with $26M, beating out new releases, including Zach Cregger's "Resident Evil.”
By the way, this is fair game. ‘Endgame’ first passed "Avatar" in July 2019, after 89 days in release. Then "Avatar" reclaimed the title in March 2021 following its own re-release in China, with further re-releases pushing its total higher. Now it’s all come back full circle.
I’m predicting Disney will roll out "Avatar" again for its 20th anniversary in 2029, which will flip the record back.
Unless, of course, "Doomsday" makes the whole debate moot by blowing past $3 billion, which isn’t entirely out of the realm of possibility. That film could hit $1 billion worldwide in its opening weekend alone. Of course, legs will depend on the overall quality of the film, which is still left to be determined.
"Avengers: Endgame" — $2.925 billion
"Avatar" — $2.923 billion
"Spider-Man: Brand New Day" — $2.5 billion
"Avatar: The Way of Water" — $2.34 billion
"Ne Zha 2" — $2.27 billion
"Titanic" — $2.264 billion
"Star Wars: The Force Awakens" — $2.071 billion
Welcome to the “Digger” megathread, where you can post your review of the movie in the comments below. I’ll try to keep this post up over the weekend as our readers catch up with Iñárritu’s $180M oddity.
