I tuned out of "True Detective: Night Country" after four episodes. Creator Issa López's mix of supernatural and crime elements didn't do much for me, and frankly, the last two seasons haven't come close to matching the brilliance of Nic Pizzolatto's original.
But if there's one actor who could get me back in front of the screen for the fifth season, it's Nicolas Cage.
Back in 2025, TheInSneider reported that Cage was in talks to headline López's next instalment, set in New York's Jamaica Bay, with cameras expected to roll in the near future. A year later, he's officially signed on to play the lead, Henry Logan, a New York detective working the case at the centre of the new season.
This marks only the second TV role of Cage's career. He recently starred in "Spider-Noir" for MGM+ and Prime Video, playing a 1930s version of Spider-Man, and he'll reprise the role in "Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse" (2027). Since then, though, Amazon has shelved the series, with no reason given.
It's not just Cage. Word is also that Antonio Banderas will play a character named Rai Garcia. Is this our detective duo?
Cage and Banderas join a long list of marquee actors who have led "True Detective." Previous seasons featured Matthew McConaughey, Woody Harrelson, Colin Farrell, Rachel McAdams, Mahershala Ali, and Jodie Foster.
A few years ago, Nic Pizzolatto, the man behind that great first season with McConaughey and Harrelson, was pushed aside after underwhelming follow-ups. Despite my mixed feelings about it, season four proved López could keep the brand alive with great reviews and strong ratings. Now she gets a true wildcard in Cage.
So, yes, I'll be watching this season. Cage as the next detective in HBO's crime saga feels like one of those rare casting choices that's simply too irresistible to pass up. He has played detectives a handful of times in his career, with a banger performance in "Bad Lieutenant: Port of Call New Orleans," and he was utterly watchable as a flashy, corrupt Atlantic City dick in Brian De Palma's flawed "Snake Eyes." And of course, there's "The Wicker Man," which wasn't "good" in the usual sense, but is legendary all the same.
