Universal has finally put a name on the fourth Mummy movie. It's called “The Mummy: Book of the Dead,” there’s a release date: October 15, 2027, basically a year from today. Is this shameless nostalgia play? You bet. Will audiences turn out for it? No doubt about it.
Oh, and the first set photos have already leaked. You can check them out below. Fraser and Weisz are 27 years removed from the original, and I'm curious how much of that 1999 physicality they can still bring to the screen.
Yes, Fraser and Weisz are back as Rick and Evelyn O'Connell. So is John Hannah as Jonathan, Evy's useless brother, and Oded Fehr as Ardeth Bay, the Medjai who walked away with more than a few scenes in the first two films. Michael Johnston (“Obsession”) is also on board.
No word yet on Arnold Vosloo's Imhotep. But come on. You don't call it ‘Book of the Dead’ by accident. That's the book Evy read out loud in 1999.
Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett are directing. The Radio Silence guys gave us “Ready or Not,” “Abigail,” and the ‘Scream’ revival, and that means this ‘Mummy’ sequel might lean into horror-comedy.
The 1999 original was written and directed by Stephen Sommers and was inspired by the 1932 film of the same name. These movies play like Indiana Jones–style adventure, mixing swashbuckling action, romance, and touches of horror in a lush period setting. The original film stars Fraser as a fearless treasure hunter who journeys to 1920s Egypt alongside a librarian, portrayed by Weisz, only to accidentally unleash a supernaturally powerful high priest.
Despite mixed reviews, the first instalment was a commercial success, grossing over $416M worldwide. The film’s success spawned two sequels: 2001’s “The Mummy Returns,” which also grossed over $400M, and 2008’s “The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor.”
The ‘Mummy’ franchise abruptly ended after ‘Tomb of the Dragon Emperor,’ which was budgeted at $175M and barely turned a profit. Word is that this fourth film will “disregard the events” of ‘Tomb of the Dragon Emperor’ — essentially pretending it never existed.
