Earlier today, we got our first look at Joseph Kosinski's "Miami Vice '85," which is now filming. The cast is sprawling, and we can add yet another talented actor to the mix.
I thought the entire main cast had been announced, but one name seems to have slipped past the trades: Dominic Sessa was spotted on set today. He joins Austin Butler, Michael B. Jordan, John Leguizamo, Alden Ehrenreich, Walton Goggins, André Holland, Andrew Schulz, Danny Ramirez, Whitney Peak, Camila Morrone and Edi Gathegi.
Sessa is hot these days. The kid who was famously cast out of Deerfield Academy's student body for Alexander Payne's "The Holdovers" has turned that debut into a real career. Since then, he's done "Now You See Me: Now You Don't" the Christmas comedy "Oh. What. Fun.," Stephanie Laing's "Tow," alongside Rose Byrne, Octavia Spencer, Ariana DeBose, and this summer he starred in Matt Johnson's "Tony" as a 19-year-old Anthony Bourdain.
Not bad for a kid who, a few years ago, was best known for his high school play. He has the kind of face you'd expect in a '70s Hal Ashby movie. That's precisely why Payne wanted him, and why everyone else does now.
Dan Gilroy ("Nightcrawler") wrote the "Miami Vice '85" script, which takes its cues from the pilot of the iconic NBC series and dives into the sleaze, excess and neon-drenched corruption of mid-'80s Miami. Kosinski is shooting it for IMAX.
"Miami Vice '85" hits theaters May 19, 2028.
