Mike Flanagan Distances Himself From ‘Clayface'? “Very Much Not Mine”

October 1, 2026 Jordan Ruimy

Many have been wondering exactly how much of Mike Flanagan's original script made it into the final cut of "Clayface," especially after it was reported that a new writer had been hired for a total overhaul.

With "Clayface" three weeks from release, Flanagan is making it clear that this is not his movie.

Speaking with CBM, Flanagan didn't mince words: "Clayface, very much is not mine. It's James Watkins' movie. I wrote a script I loved and I turned it in and then that's the last... I haven't even seen it. I'm excited to see it and see what James did with it."

That's not exactly an endorsement, but he's not disavowing it either. It's no secret this project went through a significant creative overhaul. Watkins, the British director behind the "Speak No Evil" remake, was hired, and Hossein Amini, who wrote "Drive," was reportedly tasked with a "page one" rewrite. This was no simple polish.

The final credits got split. Watkins directs from a screenplay by Flanagan and Amini, with story by Flanagan. In other words, Flanagan's name stays on the film, but how much of his script actually survived is anyone's guess.

Flanagan's version had deep roots. He'd been pushing for a standalone "Clayface" movie for years, drawing heavily on the character's appearance in "Batman: The Animated Series," particularly the two-part episode "Feat of Clay." At one point, he was even set to direct.

Not that Warner Bros. seems worried. The studio pushed the film from September 11 to October 23, 2026, planting it right before Halloween. Tom Rhys Harries leads a cast that includes Naomi Ackie, David Dencik, Max Minghella and Eddie Marsan.

Flanagan has earned enough goodwill that his name alone sells tickets to a certain crowd. If he quietly stepped back yet still kept a co-writing credit, is his name there partly to help DC sell tickets? Regardless, fans may want to temper expectations about how "Flanagan" this "Clayface" really is.
