There’s a new Sam Raimi movie hitting theatres today — “Send Help” — and it’s a devilishly entertaining one; his best in 18 years. Don’t miss it.
This to say, “Send Help” nabbed $2.1M in previews last night, and if you include the early shows, it’s actually made $3M so far. We’re looking at a potential $18M opening weekend for this one — a potential success.
I’m sure some of you might be asking about the budget — it was around $40M. So, this one could turn in a profit, and with great reviews — 76 MC, 92% RT — it’s a clear return to form for Raimi who is totally in his wheelhouse here; it’s the most Raimi-esque movie you could ask for.
This goes to show how you don’t need IP to make a movie audiences want to see, nor do you need an exorbitant high budget; “Send Help” is the work of a genre master who knows what he’s doing, and the type of story that sells itself.
This is a genre mash-up—part comedy, part adventure, part horror, all wrapped into one. Rachel McAdams stars as Linda, a capable but undervalued employee stuck under the thumb of her soulless, infuriating boss, Bradley, played by Dylan O’Brien. When the two embark on a business trip with several colleagues, their plane crashes on a remote island. Everyone else dies—leaving only Linda and Bradley alive, forced to survive together despite their mutual resentment.
Once the story lands on the island, the audience is put through the wringer. There’s genuine sadism here—the kind that makes you squirm in your seat while marveling at the craft. The leads are tormented, drenched in blood, and forced through absurdly brutal situations, all while Raimi dares you to keep rooting for them. It’s mean, it’s stylish, and it’s exactly the kind of wild ride only he can deliver. As far as January releases go, I don’t think we can do better than this film.
I’ll start an open thread this weekend where our readers can post their thoughts on the film. In the meantime, enjoy “Send Help,” and try to see it in a packed house, on the biggest screen possible.
