Fresh off her SAG nomination for supporting actress, “Marty Supreme” breakout Odessa A’zion has joined the cast of Sean Durkin’s “Deep Cuts,” which is being produced by A24. A’zion is only 25, but between her work in last year’s “She Rides Shotgun” and, of course, “Marty Supreme,” she might be the real deal.
“Deep Cuts” is an adaptation of Holly Brickley’s similarly titled novel, with production having already announced Cailee Spaeny (“Civil War”) and Drew Starkey (“Queen”) as its two leads. However, A’zion is said to have a significant role in the film. The project is set to begin production in February.
Set against the backdrop of the 2000s, “Deep Cuts” traces a romance between two music-obsessed twenty-somethings as they chase purpose, connection, and identity through a decade that shapes them as much as they shape each other. Grammy-winning singer/songwriter Blake Mills will create original music for the film.
Why am I excited for this film? Well, Durkin has so far directed three strong films: “Martha Marcy May Marlene,” “The Nest,” and “The Iron Claw”—the latter, produced by A24 and buoyed by stellar reviews, became a sleeper hit in late 2023. Here’s hoping Durkin continues his winning streak with this next one. As far as I’m concerned, he’s three for three.
